A Message from the Board Chair
Checking our Vitals is the theme for this year’s report, emphasizing Eastern Health’s responsibility and accountability as the largest health care provider in the province. What makes us unique as an organization is what we actually do on a daily basis: to provide skilled health care, service, intervention, education and comfort, from birth to death. And not just what we do – but how we’re doing it.
As the largest health care authority in the province, we serve the largest population, both in the eastern region and for the province as a whole, with unique provincial programs and with the Health Sciences Centre designation as a tertiary care centre.
Essentially, this report provides a status check on Eastern Health.
Just as health care professionals check the vital signs and symptoms, along with progress and outcomes in a patient, client or resident, so must we as an organization let our stakeholders know our status regarding progress within our four strategic priorities.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I’d like to present four feature stories, each of which provides an example of exceptional work in the priorities of Access, Quality and Safety, Population Health and Sustainability. These stories are supplemented by bulleted list of significant progress in other programs and services.
I commend the men and women in our clinical, nursing, pharmacy, public health and last, but certainly not least, our support staff who keep this great and complex organization going every day, every year. Together, we offer this snapshot of where we are now, as we conclude the final year of Together We Can – our Strategic Plan 2011-2014 – and ‘chart’ our course for the next three years.
